Conflict Resolution

Conflict can arise in any health and social care setting, whether it stems from differences in communication, workload pressures, personality clashes or misunderstandings between colleagues. Left unaddressed, conflict can affect staff wellbeing, teamwork and the quality of care provided, and can make it harder for teams to work together effectively.

This CPD-accredited Conflict Resolution course is designed for care workers, healthcare assistants, support workers, senior carers, nurses, managers and supervisors working across residential care, domiciliary care, supported living and NHS settings. Learners will develop a practical understanding of conflict dynamics, the sources and signs of workplace conflict, effective communication, active listening and empathy, and proven conflict resolution strategies for resolving disagreements constructively and maintaining safe, respectful and collaborative care environments.

FAQ

Is conflict resolution training a legal requirement in the UK?

There's no single law that names "conflict resolution" training as mandatory, but employers have general duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Equality Act 2010 to manage workplace behaviour, prevent harassment and support staff wellbeing. Conflict resolution training helps care providers meet these wider duties and reduce the risk of disputes escalating.

What is conflict resolution in healthcare?

Conflict resolution in healthcare refers to the skills and approaches used to identify, manage and resolve disagreements between colleagues, teams or individuals in a care setting. It includes recognising the sources of conflict, communicating effectively, and applying strategies that support safer, more collaborative working relationships.

What are de-escalation techniques?

De-escalation techniques are communication and behavioural approaches used to calm a tense situation before it develops into a more serious conflict. In health and social care, this can include staying calm, using active listening, acknowledging the other person's perspective, and choosing language that reduces tension rather than increasing it.

Why is active listening important in health and social care?

Active listening helps care professionals fully understand a colleague's or service user's perspective before responding, reducing the misunderstandings that can lead to conflict. It's a core communication skill covered under Care Certificate Standard 6 (Communication), and is central to resolving disagreements constructively.

Why is conflict management training important for care staff?

Unresolved conflict can affect staff wellbeing, teamwork and the quality of care provided. Conflict management training gives care staff practical tools to recognise disagreements early, communicate effectively and resolve issues constructively, supporting a safer and more positive working environment.

Does this course satisfy CQC inspection requirements?

This course is CPD accredited and supports the communication and teamworking expectations considered under the CQC's well-led key question. CQC doesn't approve individual courses, but expects providers to evidence appropriate training and staff competence in managing workplace relationships.

Is this course suitable for managers and supervisors?

Yes. While the course is relevant to all care staff, it's particularly useful for managers and supervisors, who may need to support, mediate or intervene when conflict arises within their team.

Can I complete this course on my phone?

Yes. The course is fully responsive and can be completed on desktop, tablet or mobile — study at your own pace, whenever it suits you.
