Is medication administration training a legal requirement in the UK?
Yes. Under CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment), providers must ensure that staff who administer or support medication are trained, competent and regularly assessed.
What is medication administration?
Medication administration means giving, prompting or supporting someone to take prescribed medicine safely, including tablets, liquids, topical treatments and controlled drugs.
How often should medication training be refreshed?
There's no single fixed legal refresher period, but NICE guidance recommends that staff competence is assessed annually, with refresher training whenever practices, medicines or policies change. This certificate is valid for 1 year, in line with recommended annual competency assessment.
Does this course satisfy CQC inspection requirements?
This course is CPD accredited and aligned with NICE guidance on managing medicines in care homes and the community, which CQC inspectors reference. CQC doesn't approve individual courses, but expects providers to evidence appropriate training and staff competence.
