Gaining valid, informed consent is a fundamental part of safe, lawful and person-centred care in health and social care. Failing to obtain proper consent, or acting without regard to a person's mental capacity, can breach an individual's legal rights, undermine their dignity and choice, and place providers at risk of breaching CQC Regulation 11 – Need for Consent.
This CPD-accredited Consent course is designed for care workers, healthcare assistants, support workers, senior carers, nurses, registered managers and other professionals working in residential care, domiciliary care and supported living services. Learners will develop a practical understanding of consent in health and social care, communication and decision-making, the legal and ethical framework, and mental capacity and advocacy, enabling them to support people's rights and choices with confidence.

FAQ
What is informed consent in health and social care?
Informed consent means a person agrees to care or treatment after being given clear, accessible information about what's involved, including the risks, benefits and alternatives. It ensures people can make their own decisions, supporting dignity, autonomy and person-centred practice.
Is consent training a legal requirement in the UK?
Under Regulation 11 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, care and treatment must only be provided with valid consent. Training itself isn't separately mandated by law, but providers must ensure staff understand consent to meet this regulation and CQC expectations.
What is capacity to consent?
Capacity to consent means a person can understand, retain and weigh up information relevant to a decision, then communicate their choice. Under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, capacity is assumed unless proven otherwise, and must be assessed for each specific decision individually.
What makes consent valid?
Valid consent must be given voluntarily, by a person with the capacity to decide, based on sufficient and accurate information about their care or treatment. It can be withdrawn at any time and must never be assumed or obtained through pressure.
What happens if someone lacks capacity to consent?
If someone lacks capacity, decisions must be made in their best interests under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, involving supported decision-making wherever possible. This may include consulting family, carers or an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA).
Does this course support person-centred care?
Yes. This course supports a person-centred approach to care, helping staff apply consent and mental capacity principles so that people's individual needs, preferences, dignity and rights remain central to every care and treatment decision, across residential, nursing and domiciliary settings.
Is this course CPD accredited?
Yes. This Consent course is CPD accredited, meeting recognised standards for Continuing Professional Development. Upon successful completion, learners receive a CPD-accredited certificate that can be used as evidence of ongoing professional learning.
Can I complete this course on my phone?
Yes. The course is fully responsive and can be completed on desktop, tablet or mobile devices. Learn at your own pace, wherever and whenever it suits you.
