Did You Know?
Around a third of people aged 65 and over, and around half of people aged 80 and over, fall at least once a year. In 2022/23 there were around 210,000 emergency hospital admissions in England related to falls among people aged 65 and over. Falls prevention training helps care professionals identify risk factors early, carry out effective falls risk assessments, and create safer environments for the people they support.

FAQ
What is a falls risk assessment?
A falls risk assessment is a structured process used to identify a person's individual risk factors for falling, such as mobility, medication, vision or home hazards. It allows care teams to put tailored, person-centred interventions in place. Source: NICE guideline NG249 - https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng249
What is the best fall risk assessment tool to use?
There's no single tool used across all settings; the right choice depends on the person and the care environment. Common approaches include structured questionnaires, home hazard checklists and multifactorial assessments carried out by a trained professional, often alongside a review of medication, mobility and vision.
What are the main causes of falls in the elderly?
Falls in older adults are usually caused by a combination of factors, including reduced balance and muscle strength, chronic conditions such as arthritis or Parkinson's disease, polypharmacy, poor vision, and environmental hazards like poor lighting or loose flooring. Identifying these causes early supports more effective prevention.
Who is most at risk of falling?
People aged 65 and over are at the highest risk, rising further for those aged 80 and over. People with long-term conditions, a history of falls, or those taking multiple medications are also at increased risk and should be prioritised for a falls risk assessment. Source: NICE guideline NG249 - https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng249
Is falls prevention training required in care settings?
There's no single mandated course, but providers are expected to protect people from avoidable harm under Regulation 12 (Safe care and treatment) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014. Falls prevention training helps staff meet this duty and supports evidence of safe, competent practice at CQC inspection.
Can I complete this course on my phone?
